My Favorite Place
My favorite place in the world is Baie Fine. It is a 6 hour boat ride and a 30 minute hike to view my favorite place. It is in the La Cloche Mountains above Manitoulin Island, where the land’s coast resembles a calloused heel. Baie Fine is one of the many valleys that run through the ranges. I have come to know this valley very well, travelling to it every summer. I know every lonely shoal, and every seagull poo covered rock. When you enter the channel, the mountains are on both sides of you like vast walls looming over you. They are coated with a deep pine forest and a fang-white cloak of rock covering the top. You can hear wind whistle through sail masts that sway by the shore. The water turns from dull grey to a warm blue and makes you feel at peace. The waves lapping in a rhythmic sound entrances you in where you sit. The sky is always full of seagulls cruising through the air. The sky is a diamond blue, with wispy clouds painting the horizon.
We always anchor in the same small nook, tucked away from any storm or busy cove. You can swim in the covered water until the sun goes down. The front of the boat is always covered in bright beach towels drying in the dimming sunlight. The calmness of the area makes you feel entirely at peace. The isolation is complete and here you are truly off the beaten path.
There is a secret route up Frazier Hill, one of the smaller mountains. The trail is narrow and shadowed. There are no markers, and there are large fern plants that have grown in over top of the path. The air is dim and heavy, and only a few strands of light make it through the branches into the undergrowth. There are endless beds of mouthwatering blueberries waiting to be picked. The trees around you are coffee bean brown and seem as tall as the mountain themselves. Chipmunks sit high in the branches watching you like ancient statues. The air smells green and pure. It gives you a heart thumping sensation of somewhere new.
As you stand at the top, your break is completely taken away. You can see as far as the horizon in every direction. Other surrounding islands become stepping stone sized spots on the unspoiled water. The horizon is barely there, the sky meets the water in a reflected shade of blue. The wind whips around you, and threatens to push you over an edge but you can’t be bothered. The warm rock beneath you is bone white and rolls like a wave into the forest. The view is a panoramic postcard, saved with you. My favorite place is truly unforgettable.
